Face mask went from something that you wear when you’re sick or to help filter out dust during allergy season. To a necessity, if you want to go outside.

As of today, governments all around the world are urging citizens to wear cloth face masks when going out for work or to get food. This is to protect the people around you if you happen to be an asymptomatic patient.

Cloth masks are reliable and washable, which means you can wear them repeatedly so long as you take good care of it. However, not everyone has the money or time to spend on going outside buying a cloth face mask. Ordering one online is also much more expensive because of the delivery fees and such.

Don’t fret! You can make a DIY face mask approved by the CDC, and we’re here to teach you how.

Three ways you can make a face mask!

DIY Shirt Mask

When making a shirt mask, make sure that you’re using one with a thick fabric. Haphazardly using a bandana and tying it around your face doesn’t offer much protection and is frankly inefficient. There is a way to make a bandana face mask work, and if you want to know how to do it, read the one next to this method.

DIY shirt masks are incredibly easy to make since old thick shirts that you no longer use are probably an abundance in your household.

Materials Needed

  • A thick t-shirt that’s big enough to be folded multiple times.
  • Two rubber bands or hair ties.

Assembling the mask

1. Cut across the shirt horizontally from the bottom up. Make sure to cut around 7 to 8 inches off of it.

2. Lay the material flat in front of you and fold it from the bottom to the middle and from the top to the middle so that both sides touch (but not overlap) in the center.

3. Repeat the previous step and fold the cloth one more time.

4. Use the rubber bands or hair ties to secure both sides of the cloth and fold the excess fabric inwards, and you’re done!

Bandana and coffee filter mask

Materials needed

  • Bandana
  • Coffee filter
  • Two rubber bands or hair ties

Assembling the mask

1. Place the bandana on a table and fold the square in half.

2. Horizontally cut the coffee filter across the middle.

3. Find the extensive section of the filter and put it at the center of the folded bandana.

4. Fold the bottom half and the top half to the middle again so that the bandana is covering the coffee filter,

5. Loop in the hair ties or rubber bands and tuck in the excess to the center.

6. Check how snugly it fits in your face and readjust as you deem fit.

Sewing a DIY face mask

This mask lasts way longer than the previous DIY masks, and it’s also a lot more comfortable. Making it can be a hassle, though, but it’s honestly worth it.

Materials needed

  • A pair of tightly-woven 10×6 inch cotton fabric
  • Two 6 inch pieces of cloth strips or elastics
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine

Assembling the mask

1. Get your two tightly-woven fabrics and stack them on each other.

2. Fold the 10-inch side ¼ of an inch down and sew them.

3. Fold the 6-inch side ½ of an inch over and sew the edges.

4. Thread the elastics or cloth strips in the gap you left and screw the ends together ( alternatively, you can tie them too).

5. Tuck the knots in the opening and sew on the elastic and voila!

You’re done sewing your face mask.
