Sourdough Bread Recipe for Beginners

So, you want to bake sourdough bread like the best bakers? First, allow us to get your ready for your sourdough starter. Since you are making this at home, you have to make it from scratch.

Sourdough Starter

Sourdough is a slow, fermented bread, so its starter is a live culture made from flour and water. Once we combine these two ingredients, it will start to ferment and cultivate the wild yeasts and bacteria present in the mixture. A small portion of it will make the dough rise.

Your starter must be fed with flour and water regularly to strength and maximum rising power. You’ll know if your starter is ready when it doubles in size and becomes bubbly. This usually takes 2 to 12 hours, depending on the temperature.

To check if your starter is ready, you can get a small amount and drop it into a glass of water. If it floats, it’s available, but if it sinks, it needs to be fed again.

Once your sourdough starter is ready, we are prepared to begin the procedure.

Step by Step Guide on How to Make Your Sourdough

Ingredients:

  • 150 grams bubbly, active starter
  • 250 grams of water
  • 25 grams of olive oil
  • 500 grams bread flour
  • 10 grams fine sea salt
  • Fine ground cornmeal

How to do it:

1. Mix the dough

  • Combine 250 grams water, 150 grams bubbly, sourdough starter and 25 grams olive oil in a large bowl and whisk.
  • Add 500 grams of bread flour and 10 grams fine sea salt.
  • Squish the mixture together until flour is fully absorbed. You will know if it’s fully absorbed if the dough will feel dry, rough and hairy.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a reusable wax wrap or a very damp kitchen towel.
  • Let rest for 30 minutes.
  • After it has rested, shape it into a ball. The shape doesn’t have to be perfect.

2. Let the dough rise

  • Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise. Store it in room temperature at about 68-70 Fahrenheit.
  • The amount of time that you’ll allow your dough to rise will range around 3-12 hours. It will depend on factors like the temperature, potency of your sourdough starter and other conditions of your environment. An important thing to remember during this step is temperature control time.
  • You’ll know you are done with this step by looking at the dough. Some sourdough bread doesn’t have rapid-rise yeast and might take longer to rise.

3. Divide and shape the dough

  • Prepare a lightly floured surface.
  • Remove the dough from the bowl and divide based on your preference (you can make two loaves or one single loaf)/
  • Starting at the top, fold the dough toward the centre.
  • Please give it a slight turn before wrapping to the next section of money.
  • Repeat until you have come full circle.

4. Second Rise

  • You can either coat the bottom of your oven with cornmeal or line the bottom using a non-stick parchment paper.
  • Place the dough rise will take 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • You’ll know that the second rise is complete when your money is already puffy.
  • Preheat your oven to 450 Fahrenheit.

5. Score the Dough

  • Make a slash of about 2-3 inches long at the centre of the dough after the second rise and before you place it in the oven. This will allow steam to escape and the money to expand. You can use a small serrated knife to cut.

6. Baking the sourdough bread

  • Place the lid on top of the pot and reduce heat to 400 F.
  • Bake on the centre rack for about 20 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes, remove the lid.
  • Continue to bake for 40 minutes until the bread turns golden brown. The temperature should be around 205-210 Fahrenheit.
  • Cool down for 1 hour before serving.

There you have it! You now have your homemade sourdough! Enjoy!
