Besides pizza and hotdogs, burgers have been a classic comfort food since they first came to New York. They’re tasty, meaty, and cheesy, and you only need one hand to enjoy them.

Below, we’ll list 5 of the best burger joints in New York City. We’ve taken into account taste, uniqueness, and overall appeal.

1. Shake Shack

Starting with a solid option that has become a worldwide phenomenon that started in New York, Shake Shack is still truly one of the best burgers in The Big Apple. They began as a simple hotdog stand and burger stall in 2001, but they’ve eventually become one of the most prominent burger joints on the East Coast.

Their smash burgers, made with a simple yet perfect patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and their homemade ShackSauce, are comfort food that doesn’t miss. Their Shack Stack, a cheeseburger topped with a ‘Shroom burger and the usual toppings, or their SmokeShack, a cheeseburger with applewood-smoked bacon and cherry peppers, are also great options.

2. Brooklyn Burgers & Beer

We don’t know why, but there’s just something magical about enjoying a bite of an amazing burger and a glass or two of beer together. Maybe it’s the flavor, or maybe it’s the way that beer cleanses the palate after a hearty burger.

Brooklyn Burgers & Beer is located in the center of Park Slope. They serve burgers made from scratch with local and seasonal ingredients, and guests can build their own burgers with their preferred toppings and sauces during lunch from Tuesdays to Fridays. Their beer is also sourced from local neighborhood breweries.

3. CakeBurgers

Don’t worry; CakeBurgers doesn’t serve a cake burger (but it would be cool if they did). This burger joint combines the owner’s three passions: Cakes, burgers, and the 1950s. With jukeboxes and a rotary payphone, this place is definitely a ride for nostalgia. CakeBurgers is located in El Barrio, East Harlem.

Their All American Cheese Burger is a classic, made with 100% Angus beef, American cheese, sautéed onions, tomatoes, pickles, and their own homemade sauce. They also have a vegetarian burger called Mimic Burger made with a special blend of spices, vegetables, beefsteak tomatoes, a sample, and lettuce. Cakes are baked daily, and you can order by slice or whole.

4. Sin City Burger

Located on the Upper East Side, Sin City Burger is famous for its unique and messy burgers. They’re frequented both by locals and tourists alike. Even some celebrities often visit to get a burger or two.

Their iconic S.I.N. burger with double patties with cheddar, caramelized onion, pickle relish, sin sauce, and bacon is the go-to option, but other options like their pulled ribeye, made with their own signature barbeque sauce and their chicken ’n waffle with their spicy yogurt sauce are also great sandwiches to try out.

5. Minetta Tavern

Last but definitely not the least on this list is the namesake of the Minetta Brook. This iconic institution has been visited by influential people like E.E. Cummings and Ernest Hemingway. They’ve renovated their area through the years, but their classic tavern ambiance remains.

Their signature burger, The Minetta, is a simple burger with cheddar, caramelized onions, and Pommes Frites (the French term for French fries) is their best seller. Still, their prime dry-aged beef cuts burger called the Black Label is also to consider. The Minetta Tavern isn’t just a burger place, so other entrees like their Housemade Cavatelli and Honey Glazed Smoked Li Duck Breast are worth trying out.

With the five we’ve listed above, there are plenty of options for people craving a great burger in New York. Be it a simple burger stand on the road or a fine-dining restaurant with exquisite ingredients and unique flavors, a burger will always be a portion of comfort food.
