ON THIS DAY: July 4, 1983. Dave Righetti went from ‘Rags’ to riches. Snubbed for the American League All-Star game. Righetti had a blast, showing his true worth to all of baseball and the July 4th, holiday crowd of 41,077 at Yankee Stadium. Becoming the first Yankee hurler in 27 years to throw a no-hitter, defeating the division rival Red Sox, 4-0. Wade Boggs who entered the contest with a .361 batting average struck out on a 2-2 slider to end the game.

It was the first Yankees’ no-no since Don Larson’s perfecto against the Dodgers in the 1956 World Series. And the first ever by a southpaw at Yankee Stadium. Allie Reynolds pitched the last regular season no-hitter at the Stadium in 1951.
