After the unnecessary joke on Jada without taking into account alopecia, her hair loss condition by Chris Rock, and the even more unnecessary actions of Will Smith on stage, the internet was split in half.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it’s guaranteed that you’ve probably already seen a clip of the Fresh Prince walking up on stage as long-time comedian Chris Rock presents his award for the best documentary at the 94th Academy Awards. But what exactly did happen, and what transpired on stage and behind it?
This was definitely a moment for the ages for the Oscars as almost everybody who’s anybody has given a thought or two and shared their insights on the situation. Whether they were there at the event or whether—like us—they saw it live or on replay, everyone has had something to say.
Some actors like LaKeith Stanfield say, “it felt surreal.” and “it was crazy.” Some didn’t need to give their insights as it was obvious how they felt during the situation when their reactions were covered live, like Lupita Nyong’o, who was seated very near Jada and Will during the whole escalation, and others like Nicole Kidman and Serena and Venus Williams who were also seen breathless and caught aback on live television.
Fellow hosts and celebrities Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer also gave their insights on the event. Wanda Sykes talked about the experience with Ellen DeGeneres, stating she didn’t see the slap itself but she did see the outburst and exchange of words after.
Amy Schumer, who is also receiving flack for numerous controversial activities, takes, and now more recently exposing herself, and a horrible trashed joke from the Oscars about Alec Baldwin and the accident with Halyna Hutchins, said it was “traumatizing.” However, she’s also being called out because she somehow found a way to make the incident about herself.
With all of that aside, not everyone was against the slapping—especially not his son, who starred with him on “Pursuit of Happyness,”. The most notable was the tweet of Jaden Smith that came right after the incident happened to live where he tweeted, “And That’s How We Do It.”
Other actors like Tyler Perry, Denzel Washington, and Bradley Cooper were all photographed trying to calm down the “I am Legend” Actor after the outburst. After apologizing to the academy, Will said that Denzel told him that “the devil got ahold of him.” and that “when you are at your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.”
Will posted an apology on Instagram the morning after. He said his behavior was unacceptable and inexcusable. He said he reacted emotionally to the joke that touched on Jada’s medical condition, and it was too much for him to be. He then proceeded to apologize to Chris, saying he was out of line and embarrassed for his actions, and they were not indicative of the man he wanted to be.
Will Smith ends his apology with a sincere and heartfelt message saying that there is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
