While seemingly plain and easy to cook at home, fried chicken will always be a comfort food for many. It may even be a dish that will surprise you.

For this video, we’ll list five unique fried chicken spots you just have to try in New York City.

1. Gosuke-Akimitsu

For the first spot on this list, we have a Japanese restaurant that will have you questioning yourself. Just how good can fried chicken be? Apparently as good as Gosuke-Akimitsu’s.

Japanese cuisine is well-known for its fried dishes, so their fried chicken won’t fail you. Fried to perfection, cut into good pieces, and served with a slice of lemon and a sauce on the side to complement, Gosuke-Akimitsu is a no-brainer.

2. Paula’s Soul Food Cafe

As the name suggests, Paula’s Soul Food Cafe is a no-brainer. Serving buttermilk-marinated chicken in the Bronx isn’t so unique, but Paula’s has a name for a reason.

Aside from their chicken, which most good cooks can replicate, what stands out is the rest of their menu. Embracing soul food culture, they have everything here. There’s plenty to try from whiting sandwiches, seafood boils, mac and cheese, and banana pudding.

3. Bonchon New York

While some people may question its inclusion on this list, it’s undeniable that Bonchon’s fried chicken is top-tier. For the Korean fried chicken chain, their signature crispy, sweet, light crust is something unique when it comes to fried chicken.

Of course, because it’s an international franchise, there are plenty of flavours to choose from. If you’re just visiting New York, there’s probably a flavour you won’t be able to get your hands on at home.

4. TKK Fried Chicken

There must be a reason why two fast-food chains are on this list, right? Of course. While some people may think of TKK Fried Chicken as just a fast food chain, this Taiwanese chain founded in 1974 is a must-try.

Aside from what you’d expect of the fried chickens on this list, their side dishes hot and frozen beverages contribute to the greatness of this fast food chain. Their kwa kwa bao, sticky rice wrapped with fried chicken skin, is a must-try.

5. The Commodore

The Commodore is an institution in Williamsburg. It’s been serving great dishes for more than a decade already, and there’s plenty to choose from.

Their chicken sandwiches topped with coleslaw and pickles are a must-try. Their dinner menu, which boasts several sandwiches, specials, salads, and a fried chicken plate with biscuits, honey butter, and hot sauces, makes dinner time the best time to visit.
